The Canadian Law and Moot Court Program is designed around teaching students the basics of Canadian law. In order to do that, we’re going to be splitting our time in the classroom between learning the law and practicing the law through having our students take on the roles of judges, lawyers, clients, and witnesses in the courtroom, arguing and debating both real and imaginary cases.

The Canadian Law and Moot Court Program is a six part course in which students will have the chance to explore the foundations of Canadian law. Students will learn the law through a structured curriculum that explores the foundations of law, contract law, property law, tort law, criminal law, and constitutional law. In two hour classes once a week, students will receive a brief clear summary of a legal topic, and then be asked to take on the role of either a plaintiff counsel, defendant counsel, or a judge in a structured moot court environment. In their roles as lawyers and judges, students will be able to explore interesting legal issues and make arguments to support their assigned positions.

Students who are interested in learning rhetoric, argumentation, debate, and exploring basic concepts and issues within Canadian law are all encouraged to take this class. Students will gain confidence through active speaking roles in the classroom, and learn to see legal issues as nuanced and deeply subjective, where both sides of a courtroom can make valid arguments, and where the decision-makers are called upon to make difficult judgements between two often equally attractive positions.

Our teachers are not only experienced in teaching children, they are also experts in the law. They know how to give feedback that is tailored to each students needs, helping them to improve and overcome whatever challenges they may face. Additionally, they are experts in helping the students understand the legal concepts they’ll need to know on the road to becoming an exceptional debater and leader.
